Comment on While the Benton County, AR, Republicans swept the 2008 general elections what could the Republican Party have done as a whole to increase their success at the state and national levels? by Sonnet Slaveski

First, there is nothing the party could have done to change its fate. Too many people were in love with the idea of seeing a black man voted into the office of the presidency. Plain and simple, we are a country of hopeless romantics. And when you're in love, you don't use your brain!

Second, the republicans had many years to prove themselves as true conservative minded officials and they did the complete opposite ~ that's why they lost both the house & senate under Bush in the first place. There was no way they were going to get it back with Obama on the ticket.

Third, I don't want government any closer to me than it already is! So-called government leadership is our biggest problem. If instead our elected representatives would 'FOLLOW' the will of the people maybe we wouldn't be in this mess right now.

And by the way, help yourself ~ don't look to the government for direction

The biggest challenge the Republican Party has today has to do with the leadership mentality. We have a top down mentality at the present. In otherwords the direction and course has come from the top and pushed down to the local level. A republican principle is that government is the most effective when closest to the people. This same must apply today. We need our leadership to do all in it's power to lead guide and direct the grassroots orginazations. We at the local level need to have a spirit of ownership within our committees. We need to claim every elected position in our prospective counties. Doing this can we then push up direction to those in leadership who can help us the most.
